Hot off the press chaps
Pistonheads has commentary by Norman Dewis that whilst Jaguar was investigating the diesel market, they fitted one to the MK10 for evaluation.

I don't think its unusual that a manufacturer will try different permutations of engines and transmissions, the XJ40 was tried with a Lexus V8 and apparently it fitted very well- but back to the MK10.
I must confess that this is the first time I have heard this news - it's an interesting story
Final footnote and then I really must get back to work - Norman D say's "an old MK10" - pahh - old indeed lol!
